If you were to travel through the rural areas of India, you will come across posts with a sturdy shelf about shoulder height at regular intervals beside the road. These posts are called Soma Tonga, which means in English, “resting place.”
Many people still travel on foot, and as they walk along they can stop at a Soma Tonga and place their burden on the shelf of the Soma Tonga while they rest. Once rested, they can take their load off the shelf and continue their journey.
It is understandable that the Christians in India call Jesus “My Soma Tonga.” Jesus has told us to “cast our burdens upon him” (1 Peter 5:7) and in me “you shall find rest for your souls.”
The next time you are laboring under a heavy load, carrying a burden that is hard to bear, take a rest and let your Soma Tonga Jesus hold that weight for you.
