Great Commission Day

Some years ago, at an Annual Conference held in Paducah, Ky., delegates spent an afternoon serving in various mission projects around the city. John Roberts from Benton, Ky.’s First United Methodist Church was present that day and was so inspired, he brought the idea home. For the entire year following that Annual Conference, a team, led by John, met to develop a day when the whole congregation would work together in a variety of mission projects. They decided to call it Great Commission Day.

Many years later, Benton First continues to celebrate Great Commission Day. Held the second Sunday in September, it has developed to be a day when the whole church serves in mission together and as the birthing place of many ongoing ministries.

Plans are shaping up for our Great Commission Day on September 13, 2015. I’m eager to see what God will do through the service of our church members in our community.

Ministry Teams

GCD T-shirts
Melissa Lawson will coordinate our t-shirt order. We’re using the same shirt as last year, so we can all get two years of use of them before changing the design. If you would like to order a t-shirt, please fill out the form in the weekly bulle-tin and drop it in the collection plate. The cost per shirt is $6.

GCD Ministry Teams
All of the BFUMC ministry teams from last year will be participating again this year. I’m also excited to report that we will have a couple of new teams this year:

Marshall County Resource Center
Our Kids in Training (KIT) Director, Juli Watkins, will lead a team assembling snack packs of food for needy children in Marshall County, in conjunction with one of the school resource centers. (New GCD team)

Victory Through Grace Ministries
Led by Tijuana Fowler, this team will visit Victory House in Paducah, to learn how this ministry helps victims recover from human trafficking. While there, our team will restore furniture and create a peaceful garden space for residents. (New GCD team)

Helping Hands
Led by Becky Cromwell, volunteers will go shopping for self-care, baby and special food items to help stock up our food pantry to meet the needs of Marshall County.

Children’s Ministry
Led by Brittany Ramage and Michelle Moore, the children of BFUMC will visit residents of Stilley House on GCD.

Youth Ministry
Led by Savana Smothers, the youth group of BFUMC will assemble care packages to send to our church’s college students, along with another activity.

Bags of Love
Led by Margret Henley, this ministry provides handmade bags filled with items needed by children who are removed from home by Child Protective Services. On GCD, they will cut and sew bags, so volunteers can bring scissors and a cutting board, or a sewing machine if you have them.

Operation Christmas Child (OCC)
A global ministry of Samaritan’s Purse, OCC collects shoeboxes filled with toys, clothing, hygiene items and school supplies, and delivers them with a gospel message to kids in third-world countries. Led by Midge Milam, our team will assemble shoeboxes on GCD.

Visitation Team
Led by Joy Jackson, this team visits local hospitals and nursing facilities for fellowship with patients and residents.

Greeting Card Ministry
Led by Jennifer Rodriguez, this ministry is about sharing God’s love through the mail.

Meals on Wheels
Led by Tom and April Dunn, this team will deliver hot meals to local Benton area residents and deliver groceries to residents in need who live further out in the county. On GCD, drivers will be needed to help de-liver the food.

Led by Greg Smothers, this team helps people in our community with home repairs and maintenance they can’t accomplish on their own. If you know of someone that might need our help, please pick up a Project Form from the Welcome Center in the Fellowship Hall.

New to You
Led by Joyce Brown, the team will help organize, sort and clean at the New to You shop, an outreach of the Marshall County United Methodist Cooperative Ministry.

Jail Ministry
in conjunction with the Marshall County Mission Blitz, this team will have fellowship and prayer with in-mates at the Marshall County Jail on GCD.

Kitchen Team
Led by Kevin Cherry, this team will prepare and serve lunch for all of us and also prepare meals for Meals on Wheels to deliver to local residents.

Prayer Chape
Led by Teresa Cherry, this team will actively pray over each of the Ministry teams and the individual volunteers while we’re out serving.

Please read the weekly bulletin inserts for more details about all of our Ministry Teams, and learn how you can support them through your prayer, donations, and/or volunteering. We need your help!
